The entire plot of Pentiment is set in a small town and its abbey. Nonetheless, all of the detours lead you down an unexpected path. You’ll soon discover the truth about this village’s darkest secrets. Here’s our guide to Pentiment to help you with the final mural and endings.

Pentiment – Final mural and endings

Origins of Tassing

Werner will ask you what you intend to do:

  • The saints welcome the Christian settlers
  • The abbey was founded by Lady Kiersau.
  • My choice: The Bavarians settling among the Roman ruins.

The Revolt

During the Christmas dinner, you are asked how you will depict that tragic event:

  • Honor what the peasants stood for. Otto is delivering a speech as the duke’s soldiers stand in the background.
  • The peasants burning the abbey and the mill, while Landsknechts defend the monks.
  • The ruins of the abbey surrounded by everyone who died and their families.

The Truth

I’m not sure if any decisions made here will affect the final mural in Pentiment, but this is an important moment to discuss.

In a nutshell: Andreas is still alive and well. He and Magdalene make their way through the Rathaus cellar, eventually arriving at a long-lost Roman bathhouse chamber. It will take them to the depths of the Church of the Labyrinth, where they will meet the prophetess, Sister Amalie.

Amalie reveals that she has been writing the cryptic notes the entire time. However, she was only duped by her caretaker, Father Thomas.

Thomas admits that the Historia Tassae, a book owned by Baron Lorenz, reveals the truth that their sacred saints were nothing more than alternate depictions of Mars and Diana. Without believe in the divine, people’s faith will be shaken to the core. This is essentially a “pentimento” — markings or parts of a drawing where the artist chose to make changes from the original concept.

Pentiment endings 1

When we think of religion or faith today, it may not seem like much. Nonetheless, the game’s plot is set in the 16th century, during the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, with the Catholic Church’s authority in doubt and the peasantry eager to revolt.

In any case, Thomas collapses the pillars, burying the sanctum. Fortunately, Magdalene, Andreas, and Sister Amalie escape.

The future

Magdalene speaks with some of the residents, including Otto’s son. You have the option of accepting or declining his marriage proposal. If you agree, make sure to tell him to write.Pentiment endings 2Magdalene then departs for Prague, leaving Andreas behind to teach children to paint. I’m not sure if marrying Otto Jr. has any bearing, but you do get to see a family tree that shows they did get married. You’ll also notice other characters who got married.
