5 Celebrities Who’ve Adopted Rescue Dogs

Deciding to adopt a pet rather than purchase a new one, these celebrities went to shelters or adopted strays and gave a rescue dog a new loving home. Doing a great thing and also finding a new best friend, these stars have spoken on taking in their pet pooches and saving them from a life of uncertainty at the pound or a hard time wandering the streets.

Charlize Theron

Charlize has two rescue dogs and doesn’t know why anyone buys pets: “People don’t realise you can actually go and specifically adopt exactly what you want. There are so many dogs available. It just kills me when people run to pet stores. This is the season to adopt.”

Ian Somerhalder

Ian rescued a stray from traffic: “My new girl. Rescued from traffic near the Vampire Diaries stages just a few hours ago – so smart, so beautiful & charming – all a man could ask for in a girl. So happy together. Her name is Nietzsche.”

Katherine Heigl

Katherine adopted two dogs from Sochi in Russia and says they almost didn’t make it: ”It was really intense. I don’t know if you watched the Olympics and saw what was going on over there with the animals, but it’s equally as bad here. We were asked by the NSPCA to help with two puppies. We showed up at the airport and took these dogs. We thought the male dog was dead, he wasn’t moving, we couldn’t rouse him, and we drove immediately to the emergency vet. The other little puppy seemed to be in good health, but then she ended up having respiratory problems. He was almost dead. It’s a miracle he’s alive.”

Lena Dunham

Lena added a dog to her family: “Because no day is stressful enough on its own, meet Lamby Dunham. (My mother) and I sprung him this afternoon. He’s just 12 pounds of bliss. I have a feeling we’re going to have a great life together. Unless you find out I’ve killed him in a few weeks!”

Robert Pattinson

Robert explains that he adopted a rescue dog to keep him company: “That’s kind of why I adopted the puppy. It’s from a shelter and he was going to be put down. I only got him two or three days ago and they only keep them for 10 days.”
