SUMMARY

  • Mark Andrews
  • Joey Bosa

Let’s divive to it.

1. JK Dobbins

UPDATE (Jan. 15): Dobbins (rest) is inactive for Sunday’s game in Cincinnati.

As is typical for patients recovering from ACL surgery, JK Dobbins limped after returning from his cleanup procedure earlier this season.

He was effective and showed no signs of harming the team, and the Ravens certainly wouldn’t have put their starting running back in such a precarious position if they thought his knee wouldn’t hold up long term, which there is no reason to believe.

Although Dobbins has been productive since his comeback, he has not improved. Sitting out Week 18 was meant to clear things up for him and his team, but it’s unclear if the knee is still an issue.

Dobbins hasn’t been targeted very often (only about 15 times this season) and hasn’t been touched much inside the 20-yard line. (It would appear that the Ravens have a mental block when inside the red zone and consequently never score.)

Dobbins could have a big day with Gus Edwards out due to a concussion he suffered in Week 18, but the Ravens and their quarterback are both questionable bets. The Ravens could be playing from behind and passing, or they could be forced to run the ball more than they should because Dobbins is their best player.

2. Mark Andrews

UPDATE (Jan. 15): Mark Andrews will not play in Sunday’s game in Cincinnati due to a suspension.

For Week 18, the Ravens were missing a number of key players, including Mark Andrews. The tough tight end is not afraid of getting his hands dirty, and he actively seeks out mismatches and unprepared, undersized corners to harass on his way upfield.

During Week 9, John Harbaugh mentioned that Andrews was nursing a sprained shoulder and an inflamed knee.

Since Andrews has been handling these, the Ravens may want to look up the definition of “minor” in the dictionary. Big target can play through them, but it’s obvious he’s dealing with it even when it hasn’t affected his availability.

His output has dropped because of his injuries, but without Lamar Jackson’s presence, his numbers are difficult to interpret.

He hasn’t scored a touchdown in the second half of the season and has had subpar stats overall (despite a big game in Week 17). Who they have available to use in Sunday’s rematch with the Bengals is the more pressing question.

The presence or absence of other players will determine whether they cover or re-huddle. Andrews will be on the field. My bankroll won’t let me risk anything on the Ravens right now.

3. Joey Bosa

UPDATE (Jan. 15): Active

Joey Bosa felt some discomfort in his groin a week after returning from surgery to re-attach his groin muscle to the bone. This was to be expected, but I don’t understand why the Chargers would play with Bosa at all.

Given his extended absence (from Week 1 to Week 17), and the fact that it doesn’t take long to put a muscle back into a bone and get everything working again, that seems reasonable.

Bosa sustained an injury to his groin, but it was to the muscle’s belly rather than its attachment, which had been a problem before.

The bursty sprint that makes Bosa so dangerous on the edge is exactly the kind of thing that would cause problems here, where there is likely still some atrophy and some healing taking place.

Even if Bosa was playing through pain, the injury doesn’t look bad enough to keep him out for the rest of the season.

There is some doubt about efficacy, and if the initial spark isn’t there, it’s enough to make the Jags, who are getting points at home on Saturday (with one less day to recover), an intriguing play even if you’re just looking at the money line. Even though Bosa has been fully involved in practice this week, his status remains uncertain.
