Refugees singer Lauryn Hill is set to serve some time behind bars for failing to pay her taxes. The singer refused to pay taxes for up to $1.8 million of her earnings.  She has now paid $970,000 in taxes, but is reported to still owe $285,000 in interest and penalties, while the judge also added a $60,000 fine for tax evasion to her sum. Hill claimed in court that she intended to pay the money back but couldn’t, commenting:

“I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that.”

Hill’s sentence begins on July 8th, although it is unclear where she will serve her time yet. The singer recently returned to the music industry, signing a new record deal and is supposed to be working on new music currently. When she is released from jail she will also have three months in home confinement to go through, so let’s hope she has a home studio set up. Lauryn commented on having to pay the taxes, comparing the issue with being a slave – see what she had to say over at CelebrityVIPLounge!
