Injury Report Phillies: Ranger Suarez, Brandon Marsh, Darick Hall and Andrew Painter

The Philadelphia Phillies left New York with injuries and will begin their first homestand in 2023.

Phillies’ Ranger Suarez, Brandon Marsh, Darick Hall, and Andrew Painter’ injury status

  • Andrew Painter

The Phillies placed Andrew Painter on the 60-day injured list, indicating that he will not be able to return before Memorial Day. It’s not entirely surprising. Painter, who has a sprain in his right elbow, has yet to pick up a baseball again.

When he does, the Phillies will proceed with caution. Throwing off flat ground would be the most likely first step, followed by a mound, bullpen session(s), and minor league tune-up starts.

He could still help the Phillies this summer, but not anytime soon.

In the series finale at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, Darick Hall sprained his right thumb sliding into second base.

He could be sent to the minors, with left-handed utilityman Kody Clemens likely to be the first to be called up.

  • Brandon Marsh

Brandon Marsh sprained his left ankle the night before returning to the game on a DJ LeMahieu flyball to the warning track. Marsh had fouled a ball off his right foot earlier in the night and was in a lot of pain, but the injuries had nothing to do with each other.

Marsh moved cautiously in the Phillies’ clubhouse following Wednesday’s loss, from which he was scratched 30 minutes before first pitch.

With Marsh out, the Phillies turned to Cristian Pache in center field, and he struggled again at the plate. He also did not pitch all nine innings for the second time in a row. With two men on and two outs late in Wednesday’s game, the Phillies brought in Josh Harrison to pinch hit for him. Pache has left all nine runners on base during his at-bats.

If the Phillies decide to part ways with Pache, they have two other right-handed-hitting options in center field in Dalton Guthrie and Scott Kingery.

Guthrie is on the 40-man roster, while Kingery is not, but if the Phillies designate Pache for assignment, that would free up a spot.

  • Ranger Suarez

Ranger Suarez is improving, having thrown two bullpen sessions since Sunday. He’ll need a minor-league rehab assignment because he hasn’t pitched since March 8.
