How to Find and Use Shovel in Baldur’s Gate 3

Lost for a way to unearth those enticing dirt mounds scattered throughout Baldur’s Gate 3? Fear not, adventurers! This guide will equip you with the knowledge to not only find a trusty shovel, but also utilize it to uncover hidden treasures.

Where to Find Your Shovel in Baldur’s Gate 3

The good news is that shovels are readily available in the early hours of Baldur’s Gate 3. Here are your options:

  • Overgrown Ruins: This is your quickest route to a shovel. Northeast of the crash site, you’ll encounter bandits at the Overgrown Ruins. Avoid a fight (for now) and head to the Chapel gate north of the ruins. Look closely to the right of the locked door – a trusty shovel awaits!
  • Ravaged Beach: Travel north from the Injured Mind Flayer or west of where Tieflings hold Lae’zel captive. You’ll find a dirt mound with a conveniently placed shovel embedded in it. Take what fate has provided!

  • Merchant Aaron: After clearing the goblins at the Druid Grove’s gate, head to the Hollow. Here, Aaron, a halfling merchant, offers a shovel for a mere 9 gold.
  • Blighted Village: West of the Druid Grove, near the entrance to the Blighted Village, a bridge with broken carts and scattered crates holds another shovel nestled amongst the clutter.

How to Use the Shovel

The shovel’s true purpose lies in excavating dirt mounds scattered across the landscape. Many of these mounds conceal valuable loot, rewarding your exploration efforts. Here are two early locations to test your newfound digging prowess:

  • Overgrown Ruins: South of where you fought Gimblebock’s crew, past the statue and near a stone bench, lies a hidden dirt mound waiting to be unearthed.

  • East of Overgrown Ruins: Follow the narrow path leading to a locked hatch. Along this path, you’ll find another dirt mound ripe for excavation.

As you approach a suspicious dirt pile, your character will need to pass a perception check. If successful, you’ll see a visual representation of the mound. As long as you have a shovel in your inventory (carried by you or a companion), simply interact with the dirt pile. No need to equip the shovel – the game takes care of the digging animation once you initiate the action.

With these tips and locations in mind, you’re well on your way to becoming a master excavator in Baldur’s Gate 3. Remember, hidden treasures often lie beneath the surface, so keep your eyes peeled for those promising dirt mounds and get digging!
