Each with their own very different ideas on what it’s like to be a working mom in the spotlight, these 5 stars have opened up on finding balance between work and home life. Some say they have an easy time, because they’ve found a way to make it work for them personally or can afford to hire as much help as they need, unlike other moms who are less well off. Others admit they can find it difficult because their careers are so demanding. Here are their personal opinions on the subject.
Angelina doesn’t think women as privileged as herself can complain because they can get as much help as they need: “I actually feel that women in my position, when we have all at our disposal to help us, shouldn’t complain. Consider all the people who really struggle and don’t have the financial means, don’t have the support, and many people are single raising children. That’s hard.”
Busy has found a balance she is happy with as a mom: ”Being a working mom, I’ve got it made. I’m on a TV show where my hiatus is [my kids’] summer, so I’m free to be with them in the summer time. I’m able to afford full-time help because of what I do. My husband also works, and my nanny makes my life doable and so easy. I feel like, for me, I have nothing to complain about in that regard…I don’t ever feel like I have to stop myself from complaining about how hard it is to be an actress. I mean, it’s not that hard.”
Denise makes sure she is there for her kids and puts them first: “I think one of the questions I’m most often asked is how do I balance it all, how do I balance being a single working mom…. When I’m on set working long hours, I’m not always home for dinner. When my daughter has a soccer game on a Saturday, I make the choice to miss a work event. My children come first – they are my first priority.”
Gwyneth believes it’s hard for her because being an actress is demanding: ”I think it’s different when you have an office job, because it’s routine and, you know, you can do all the stuff in the morning and then you come home in the evening. When you’re shooting a movie, they’re like, ‘We need you to go to Wisconsin for two weeks,’ and then you work 14 hours a day and that part of it is very difficult. I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as, of course there are challenges, but it’s not like being on set.”
Halle does find it difficult to juggle both her home and work life now that she has a newborn: ”You know, I’m working on a television show now, so I’m juggling working and being a mom and breast feeding while I’m working. It’s a whole new life for me now all over again, having a new little baby again.”
