PlayStation Showcase 2022 Predictions: Play Station Cloud Gaming, The Last of Us Multiplayer Trailer & More

The PlayStation Showcase 2022 seems inevitable this month, but Sony hasn’t said a word about this event even happening. What makes it so unavoidable? There’s a lot of good stuff coming to the PlayStation 5 – some sooner than later, like God of War Ragnarök – and another big September event would be a great time to host an hour-long stream about it all. Of course, until Sony says otherwise, don’t take this as gospel that an event is taking place. But first, take out your crystal ball and make some predictions about what might happen at this year’s PlayStation Showcase.

PlayStation Showcase 2022 obvious predictions:

So, what can we expect to see at the PlayStation Showcase?

  • God of War Ragnarök gameplay: Since Game Informer has already shown gameplay, an extended gameplay trailer is obviously coming.
  • More PSVR 2 stuff: Whether it’s Horizon or Resident Evil Village, expect to see some extra gameplay and more information about the headset before its 2023 release.
  • New games on PS Plus: The September games have already been announced, but Sony will undoubtedly use this opportunity to reveal what else Premium subscribers will be able to obtain.

Now that those are out of the way, let’s think big and go a little crazy with some more outlandish hopes and predictions.

Metal Gear Solid remastered trilogy announced

PlayStation Showcase 2022 1

At the Tokyo Game Show, Konami revealed a new game in a “world-loved series,” and, more intriguingly, reports of a remastered Metal Gear Solid trilogy have increased.

Despite its widespread platform availability, MGS has always felt to me like a PlayStation entity due to its history with the platform. So, while Konami will be ecstatic about its new entry into whatever series it is, I believe the PlayStation Showcase 2022 would be an excellent way to reintroduce this trilogy with a fresh coat of paint.

And who knows, it could pave the way for a Metal Gear Solid 4 remake. Please give me what I want, Konami.

PlayStation Cloud Gaming

With the Backbone One PlayStation Edition and Xbox Cloud Gaming so far ahead, it’s now or never for a true competitor that provides expanded cloud access to the PS Plus library through more dedicated apps and any web browser.

But here’s the icing on the cake, which is more of a wish than a solid prediction because I doubt the company will do it: Sony cracks the DRM code and makes any games you’ve purchased (online or on disc) available for cloud play.

Spider-Man 2 gameplay

PlayStation Showcase 2022 2

Spider-Man 2 is set to release in 2023, and given what happened in the lead-up to the original Spider-Man on PS4, now is the time to get a look at the gameplay.

But what shall we witness? With the control fluidity Insomniac has completely nailed for the web slinger, it will undoubtedly be Hollywood-level chaos and combat. The twist, as hinted at in the announcement trailer from the previous year, is that the game is co-op multiplayer, with one player taking on the role of Peter Parker and the other taking on Miles Morales.

I’m referring to combo finishers, amusing banter between the two, and tactics for sending one Spider-Man to take out a number of snipers while the other defeats enemies in melee combat. The big wager to make it more enticing will be the revelation that the entire narrative can be played cooperatively.

Spider-Man Miles Morales PC gets a Christmas release date

PlayStation Showcase 2022 3

Spider-Man on PC and Steam Deck is fantastic, but what about Miles Morales? We already know it’s coming, so it’s time to release a trailer and announce the game’s December release date.

Given that Miles Morales is set in a wintry New York decked out in holiday decorations, it’s the most obvious move to keep PC players happy. I believe the smart money is on Friday, December 9, but only time will tell.

The Last of Us multiplayer trailer

PlayStation Showcase 2022 4

With The Last of Us Part I out of the way, it’s time to focus on the multiplayer project, and while we saw some intriguing concept art at Gamescom 2022, it’s time for a teaser trailer.

I don’t think we’ll see gameplay until next summer at the earliest. However, some kind of promotion to establish the location, the variety of PVE and PVP combat on offer, and signs of the Battle Royale framing of these massive battlefields where you only have one mission: endure and survive.

We get a glimpse of what Supernatural Studios is working on

According to some reports, the creative mind behind SSX is working on a new snowboarding game called Project Gravity.

Shortly after this article was published, the team at Supernatural Studios announced an official partnership with a “major global publisher” and went into stealth mode, which means there have been no updates since.

This is more of a prediction that necessitates me wishing upon a monkey’s paw while throwing salt over my shoulder and crossing my fingers. But maybe a short teaser of what’s to come would be enough to whet my appetite.
