The Los Angeles Lakers are 2-7 and have had a nightmare start to the season. There isn’t much going right for the team, and there isn’t much hope that they’ll be able to turn things around – short of a big trade that may or may not be available.

And, while most of the talk about a potential Lakers trade revolves around Russell Westbrook, perhaps the team should consider trading another player. If the Lakers want to rebuild as a contender, they may not have many options.

According to Bill Simmons, who mentioned it on his most recent podcast, the Lakers may be willing to trade Anthony Davis – perhaps as a backup plan if they can’t get the right deal for Russell Westbrook.

Let us examine the information provided above.

To be fair to this report, I don’t believe the Lakers have arrived. Certainly, they could get there. And I believe that is the most important question raised by this report. The Lakers aren’t ready to pursue trades for Davis right now, but they may have no choice if they want to build another championship team around LeBron.

According to the report, this is the Lakers’ backup plan. If they can’t build a contender with a Westbrook trade, this must be considered. Mostly because the potential return that the Lakers would demand would be enormous.

And if that’s something that could help this team build another championship-level team on the fly, it’s something the Lakers should think about.

Davis has averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds per game while shooting 53 percent from the field for the struggling Lakers this season.

At the very least, it’s an intriguing dynamic. Davis has been excellent when healthy. However, in Los Angeles over the last couple of seasons, that simply hasn’t been the case.

It might be time to let go. And if the Lakers reach that point, it could spark an interesting bidding war for one of the game’s best big men.
