5 Celebrities Who’ve Officiated Weddings

These 5 celebrities have had the unique experience of joining a couple together in matrimony. Becoming ministers or officiators, they’ve done the special job for close friends, family members or even people they don’t know, celebrating two people who love each other and bringing them together as they wed.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict became ordained and married two gay friends in a ceremony held in Ibiza. He commented: “It’s a very private, lovely thing to be asked to do. Of course, I’m going to make a joke after it, ‘I do weddings. Next will be children’s parties and bat mitzvahs,’ if it goes well. It’s a mainly Jewish and gay audience, so hopefully they will be lenient towards me.”

Lady Gaga

Gaga turned minister for her best friend’s wedding: “I’m actually getting ready now to be ordained to marry one of my best friends, Tricia, who is also my yoga instructor.”

Sir Ian McKellan

Ian helped his best friend Patrick Stewart marry his wife Sunny: “I am going to marry Patrick. Well, no, how else do you put that? I am going to officiate at his wedding. But in Massachusetts, or in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny and Patrick will then be married. I’ve done it once before, with two guys having a civil partnership. I was crying my eyes out.”

Joan Rivers

Joan married a same-sex couple who she met at a book signing. The couple said that it was a spur of the moment decision: “While we were waiting, we were reading the book and she had mentioned in there being an ordained minister. I jokingly asked [her assistant] ‘do think it’s true, do you think she’ll marry us?’ And he goes ‘ask her’ and so I did. I don’t think he really thought I would and neither one of thought she’d say yes.”

Jonah Hill

Jonah stepped up to marry his close friend Adam Levine and model Behati Prinsloo: “Jonah was hysterical. He was telling so many jokes, but then in the middle (he) would be so sweet and sincere … He also talked about how sweet Behati is and how perfect they are for one another.”
