5 Celebrities Speak on Making Parenting Mistakes

As they always say, kids don’t come with a manual and mistakes can be made along the way by everyone who gives parenting a go. Children are fragile and it’s easy to make mistakes as a parent that can impact them even later on in life, it’s a veritable minefield and these 5 stars are readily able to admit that they’ve make plenty of mistakes along the way, or that they worry about the choices they make for their children but just have to do the best they can do. Some try to be good role models, while others are only realizing their errors later on in life.

Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy admits he has been a bad parent in the past because he tries to be a friend to his children: “How many interviews did I give and say, ‘You know what’s important between me and Miley is I try to be a friend to my kids’? I said it a lot. And sometimes I would even read other parents might say, ‘You don’t need to be a friend, you need to be a parent.’ Well, I’m the first guy to say to them right now: You were right. I should have been a better parent. I should have said, ‘Enough is enough—it’s getting dangerous and somebody’s going to get hurt.’ I should have, but I didn’t. Honestly, I didn’t know the ball was out of bounds until it was way up in the stands somewhere.”

Uma Thurman

Uma realizes there is no manual for parenting but she tries to be a good role model: “I constantly wrack my brains, but unfortunately there’s no manual for it. It’s really important to be a role model. But I always try to explain to my children that their mum is only human, too. What does being a mother mean to me? That’s simple – Every day I experience the greatest love I have ever felt. It takes a lot of energy and nerves, but I don’t want to miss a second of it.”

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker worries about being such a bad parent that her kids might need help because of her: “I remember lying in bed before my son was born, quite pregnant, thinking, ‘I’m going to ruin him. The first thing I say to him that’s meaningful is going to scar him for life. I’m going to mean to be helpful, and it’s just going to destroy him, and he’s going to spend the rest of his life flat out on a couch in a therapist’s office.”

Jessica Alba

Jessica knows that mistakes are inevitable but you have to just do your best and use your intuition: “You accept that you’re going to make mistakes, that you’re going to try your hardest and you’ll love them with your everything. That’s all you can do.”

Brad Pitt

Brad admits that he can make mistakes when it comes to parenting, but he tries to make it up to his kids: “It’s not like I’m a horrible parent, but I’ve certainly made mistakes and had to make up for it. I’m painfully aware that my actions leave a double mark on them in these formidable years, so I make sure I don’t bring my crap home.”
