While have a social media account as a celebrity can have a positive side, there can also be so much abuse to endure. These 5 celebrities have all said they’ve received a lot of horrifying and scary abuse messages through their social media accounts. Some realised they need to take a step back from social media as a result, while others try to ignore and avoid reading the hurtful comments people send their way.

FKA Twigs

FKA Twigs was shaken when she received racial abuse: “I am genuinely shocked and disgusted at the amount of racism that has been infecting my account the past week. Racism is unacceptable in the real world, and it’s unacceptable online.”

Jessie J

Jessie is still shocked by some fan abuse: ”It’s hard. I still have a heart deficiency and have days where I struggle. The fans don’t get that sometimes. The abuse you get if you have to cancel a show … It’s scary. With social media, young people use words of hatred so flippantly now. It’s either ‘I LOVE YOU!’ or ‘I HATE YOU AND I WANT YOU TO DIE’. There is no middle ground. Everything’s an extreme because people want to be noticed … I tend not to read my social media timeline as much as I used to, because I try to lead a very positive life and Twitter can be quite dark sometimes.”

Lena Dunham

Lena has come to accept that people will always have mean things to say and she has distanced herself from it: “You know, it gets easier and easier. My fears came true: people called me fat and hideous, and I lived. And now I keep living.”

Lily James

Lily did not realise that people would have such negative opinions of her: “I was surprised people had an opinion about me, but now I don’t want to engage with that stuff.”

Mayim Bialik

Mayim, who is Jewish and also has a friend in the Israel Defence Forces, revealed the abuse she recieved on social media for visiting the country: ”That’s what’s amazing … simply by going to Israel this summer and saying nothing more than, ‘I’ve gone to Israel,’ I got the same amount of hatred and threats and anti-Semitism for actually making a statement trying to support people whether I like it or not are serving in an army.”
