Who Is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo?

Good question! Despite having a release date of sometime this December, no one has been cast for the part of Lisbeth Salander in the probably unnecessary remake of the Swedish version of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling crime novel (which actually kinda sucks). But a short list is making the rounds on the interwebs, and the top five actresses ARE:

Emily Browning (Sisters, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events)
Sophie Lowe
Sarah Snook
Rooney Mara (The Social Network, A Nightmare On Elm Street)
and an unnamed French actress

The first three actresses are all Australian, while Rooney Mara is American. It seems like they’re going a similar route for Dragon Tattoo as they did with the new Spider-Man movie in terms of casting a relative unknown. Carey Mulligan was rumored to be a frontrunner for the part, but she’s confirmed that she is no longer in talks. That’s almost definitely the right choice; even though Mulligan is an excellent actress, she would never look the part. Salander is supposed to be anorexic-looking with sharp, angular features, and no hint of softness to her. None of the actresses really fit the bill as far as that’s concerned, but I think Browning is the best fit for the character’s goth, cyberpunk aesthetic. However, David Fincher loves using actors more than once, and he’ll have directed Mara in The Social Network, so she might have an edge. Here’s what the character looked like in the original movie:

Any chance we could do some tailoring to the fabric of time and space to let a young Anjelica Huston play the part?
