Story of the Day: John Mayer Couldn’t Talk for Four Months Straight

John Mayer has revealed that he had to go four months without talking while recovering from a throat problem, which must have been fun for whoever he was dating at the time! The singer had botox injected into his vocal chords, which might sound like the ultimate in vanity, but really it helped fix a problem after having a granuloma removed. He wasn’t able to talk after the surgery and instead turned to his trusty iPad to provide him with the means to communicate with others:

“I was forced to type on my iPad to communicate anything. It wasn’t liberating. Is breaking your leg liberating? No. All complexity is gone when you don’t have a choice.”

He believes the whole experience helped him start a new kind of life even though it was very difficult at first:

“I probably had contiguously three, maybe four months of not saying a word. The endurance was tough for me, but I started a new life.”

He is now healed and made a full recovery from the surgery and intends to continue his career with a new tour this summer:

“It’s hard to believe that I’m healed, but just to make sure, I keep going back (to the doctor) every two weeks for a look, and it’s the same – if not better.”
