Rue McClanahan arrives for Bea Arthur Memorial Service in New York

Sad news, my friends: Rue McClanahan has died at the age of 76 of a massive stroke, her second after suffering a first, minor stroke earlier this month following bypass surgery. Her family was with her at the time of her death and says that she died peacefully. McClanahan married actor Morrow Wilson in 1997 (her sixth marriage) and is survived her husband and Mark Bish, her son from a previous relationship,

While younger audiences (meaning those who grew up in the ’80s) know her best as the promiscuous, vivacious Southern Belle Blanche Devereaux on Golden Girls, McClanahan also acted on Broadway and in soap operas. Her first prime-time show was Maude, which starred her future Golden Girls co-star Bea Arthur as the titular character. Arthur died last year, and Estelle Getty, who played Sophia Petrillo, died in 2008. National treasure Betty White will continue to be immortal and awesome.

Rest in peace, Rue; may Heaven provide you with caftans of the finest silks.
