Robert Downey Jr Off To Be The Wizard?

Cinematical is reporting that Robert Downey Jr is Sam Mendes’ first choice to play the Great and Terrible Oz in the latest adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic series. Mendes has some free time since the Bond franchise is going undercover for a little bit, and this is what he’s chosen to do with it, since getting frisky with Kate Winslet is pretty much off the table.

I…don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand: Mendes is a great director, and RDJ = tasty, tasty bowl of sexeh pudding. On the other hand: there are approximately 50 gajillion adaptations of The Wizard of Oz and sundry stories in the works, including a film adaptation of Wicked. Pile that on top of all the ones that have been done in the past, and we’re looking at an overload akin to the vampire craze of late.

I’m more looking forward to Oz, which is somewhat adapted from Todd McFarlane’s weird-ass line of bondage-horror figurines featuring the characters from the stories. So unless Robert Downey Jr’s “man behind the curtain” turns out to be gloriously naked, I’m not putting it on the short-list of movies I want to see.
