We Americans should take a lesson from the Royalty Method of frugality and recycling. I mean why else would William give his fiancee his mother’s old ring? After all every fiancee wants her own new ring. I mean even if you do regift a ring, you should have a new setting made so that the bride to be doesn’t know how cheap you are. And that holds true even though your fiancee may have learned the old saying for a bride is to “wear something old , something new, something borrowed, something blue” on her wedding day.

Still if William wants to be sentimental and remember his mother by gifting her old ring to his new bride, he should do it quietly- like on their first wedding anniversary. That is if this happy union lasts that long. Of course, we’re all toasting the newly engaged couple. But we know, we know. Poor William doesn’t have good examples in his family for long monogamous relations. All Brits know that his grandmother is an anomaly in royalty.

But back to frugality and recycling lessons for Americans to learn. When your mother leaves you her $150K 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring in her will, don’t toss it in the Salvation Army bucket. Know that it is perfectly good manners these days to give it to your bride to be. And if your fiancee rebels?. Tell her, you are just following Prince Willam’s example.
