PETA vs. Tyson: The Animal Planet Showdown

For those of you out there who watch Animal Plant, there’s a new show for you to anticipate. With reality shows dominating the tube these days, Mike Tyson wanted a piece of the action. The show’s tentative title is “Taking on Tyson,” and will be centered around the highly overlooked sport of pigeon-racing. It’s set to film in Brooklyn, New York in the near future.

In accordance with PETA’s reputation they have already expressed their concern for the pigeons through a letter sent to New York attorneys, requesting an investigation be made into the new show and the treatment of the birds. It is another concern of PETA’s that wagering will come in conjunction with the racing, however Animal Planet has assured the organization there will be nothing of the kind involved in the program.

A statement was issued by Animal Planet which says:

“Regarding PETA’s latest allegations, I wanted to clarify that for Animal Planet’s Taking on Tyson show, there have never been any plans for wagering on the pigeon races. We have not yet begun filming but, rest assured, all of the pigeons that we will feature in the program are cherished and respected by their owners, including Mr. Tyson. Animal Planet will honor that respect and care in our production and in how these beautiful creatures are treated.”

It is PETA’s view that Animal Planet should feature more shows “like “Whale Wars” and “Animal Cops” in which people go to bat for animals and fewer programs that showcase cruelty and profiteering at animals’ expense.”

I suppose we’ll see how far PETA takes this one. With any luck at all the show will film and air because racing pigeons just sounds too good to pass up. Oh Mr. Tyson…
