Natalie Portman Is The “Black Swan”

Despite my general apathy for Natalie Portman, Darren Aronofsky’s new drama/psychological thriller Black Swan looks intriguing. Portman plays Nina, the star of a new production of Swan Lake whose prima status is challenged by the arrival of Mila Kunis’ character, Lily. Lily is not as technically brilliant as Nina but has more fire and passion, which leads to an odd, obsessive dynamic between the two. I don’t know about Kunis, but Portman has an extensive background in ballet, so this should reveal some interesting facets to her acting. I hope, anyway, because I can’t sit through another V for Vendetta situation.

Interestingly, Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte designed the costumes for the dancers. This is the first time they’ve done costuming for movies, and it’s not clear why Aronofsky went with real-world fashion designers rather than a professional Hollywood costumer or even someone who specialize in dance costuming. But if ballet’s not your thing, and fashion bores you, there’s always the scene where Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis make out. And that’s all I will say about that.

Here are some of the released stills:
