Naomi Watts Says Playing Princess Diana is Her Hardest Role Ever

Naomi Watts is currently filming a part for ‘Diana’ which sees her step into the shoes of the legendary Princess Diana, and according to the actress it’s been her hardest challenge to date. She feels as though she is under a great amount of pressure to properly represent the much-loved late princess and wants to represent her as accurately as possible in the way that people knew her:

”Playing Princess Diana was the hardest thing I’ve done. Because of the pressure of everyone’s beliefs about who she was and the fact that it was just really hard to claim her as my own, since everybody feels they know her.”

Naomi says that she didn’t want to just have to mimic Diana, she wanted to try her hardest to embody her so that it felt more real:

”I don’t want to get caught up in mimicry – that’s the worst thing. I was to try to embody her and get the essence of her. Those things are really important to me.”

She also voices her concerns about playing the part because it is such a sensitive topic considering her sons are still alive and she wants to honor the memory of Diana to the best of her ability. It was difficult taking on such a hugely iconic figure:

”I was afraid of the comparison that comes with playing any iconic figure – and because of her memory – we’re fond of her memory. And the way she died … Is it going to open it all up again? We’re certainly not trying to upset the boys, though they’re men now. I hope they’re OK with it.”
