Both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have released world premiere videos on American Idol this season. Both are first time judges on the show, and neither had released a new video in a while.  Does that seem fishy to anyone else?

Jennifer Lopez – On the Floor

Jennifer Lopez has had some ups and downs the last few years.  Her last album was released in 2007 and her last single was released in 2009.  Her new album, Love? was supposed to be released in 2010, but it wasn’t released until April 19, 2011 because Lopez had some difficulty with her label and ended up leaving them to sign with Def Jam.

Jennifer Lopez debuted her video and single On the Floor in March as part of an American Idol show and gave her fans the chance to choose their favorite of three possible endings for the video. Later in April, the world debut of the JLo video aired and became the #1 iTunes single download and received 13 million YouTube views. Her single debuted at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #7 on Billboards Dance Club Play Chart.

Fox certainly benefitted from the Lopez partnership on American Idol. The night of the world premiere of the final video, Idol broke viewing records and was the #1 most watched show on a Thursday night on any network.

The music industry is used to seeing collaborations in the production of music, but On the Floor marks a new age of collaborative distribution.

Steven Tyler – It Feels So Good

Steven Tyler has benefited even more from this kind of collaboration With Idol. In November of 2010, just prior to the release of his first solo single, Love Lives, a song for a Japanese sci-fi movie, Idol announced that Tyler would join the show as a judge. Steven Tyler premiered a music video for his solo single It Feels so Good on the May 13th American Idol. The release of his single followed his new autobiography Does the Noise in My Head Bother You? Released on May 3, 2011.

Tyler admits he joined American Idol as a response to feeling held hostage by his band. But now that he has proven that he doesn’t need Aerosmith to be popular the band buried the hatchet and is working with Tyler on finishing their 15th studio album together.  Hoping to horn in on Tyler’s Idol momentum, the band is set to appear on the finale of American Idol as well.

Both Lopez and Tyler have no doubt improved their popularity by being on American Idol this season and have had a little to do with improving the ratings on the show.  Randy Jackson had better come out with a new video soon or Idol will have to find another washed up star to add to the judges’ panel.
