John Lennon Rolled Over In His Grave, Said “Meh,” Went Back To Resting In Peace

Beatles fans have gotten their peace-beads in a knot after Sean Lennon posted a picture on his Twitter account of Lady Gaga playing the Lennons’ famous white piano in Yoko Ono’s New York home. The outraged @s were pretty much all along the lines of “She’s not worthy!” and “You’re desecrating his memory!” and “Oh, the humanity!”

Sean’s replies were mostly like,

“Pianos are meant to be played. Why is everyone so uptight? What should we do, lock it away in a dusty room? So judgemental…”

“Come on, lighten up … life’s too short, there’s enough real problems in the world,”

and

“Firstly, he gave that piano to my mother for her birthday, it is hers. Secondly, he was not not uptight the way you seem.”

I’m on his side, not just because a) he’s one of the few people in the world qualified to weigh in on this, b) he’s technically correct with regards to possession, and c) I think Lady Gaga is an actual talented musician underneath her pop-star persona, but also because d) I think John Lennon would have dug her. He might not have been wild about her music, but I think he would have appreciated her commitment to being a weird, rebellious, polarizing figure. It’s okay, people, it’s just a piano. It’s not like she claimed she was better at playing it than Jesus.
