Chris Brown Is A Big Ol’ Faker

Despite whining at the drop of a hat about how people hate him for beating up his girlfriend, Chris Brown can’t work up any real tears for a music legend who supposedly inspired him, even while performing in said legend’s honor at a tribute marking the anniversary of his death.

Video of Brown’s performance at the BET Awards has been making the Internet rounds lately and seems to inspire one of two feelings: affection in apologists who want to use it as proof that he’s not such a bad guy, or disdain from those who think it just shows that he’s got no control over his emotions (I fall into the “little bitch” camp, myself). A source who was backstage at the show is claiming that Brown was given eye drops by his bodyguard that he used right before he went onstage. The singer Lloyd has also said something about a discussion with Brown about crying on command.

I think it’s pretty likely that either: a) he really did lose his shit because he has no filter or b) he faked the histrionics entirely. However, there are a couple reasons this story doesn’t seem completely true, namely that Brown would have been crying from the beginning of his number if he had used eye drops immediately prior to performing. It’d be easy enough to start a rumor about eye drops and have people believe it, especially considering the (deserved) ill-will towards him. Whether the display of emotion was genuine or calculated, I don’t think it had quite the effect that Brown was looking for. I haven’t read anything about his response to what people are saying, but I would imagine that when it comes, it will be petulant and full of rationalization, like most of what he says.

Here’s the video:
