THE CELTICS
The Celtics have lost four of their last six games, which is a bad streak. The top spot in the Eastern Conference is now only one game ahead of them. The Detroit Pistons are the worst team in the Eastern Conference because they have lost three of their last four games.
The Boston Celtics had the rest of the weekend off after turning in a lackluster performance on Friday in order to refocus for Monday’s road game against the Detroit Pistons.
After two consecutive losses to the Phoenix Suns, the top-ranked Boston Celtics will take on the cellar-dwelling team in the Eastern Conference.
During their recent shaky six-game stretch, Boston has been without guard Marcus Smart. Before Smart’s ankle injury, the Celtics were on a nine-game winning streak.
“Marcus brings energy to the game,” Brown said. “He brings pace to the game. He gets us easier shots, easier looks for our guys. And defensively, he adds that tenaciousness that gets us going, picks us up in games like this.”
Although he is averaging 30.9 points per game for the Celtics, Jayson Tatum had one of his worst scoring games of the season against the Suns. The 20 points Tatum scored were aided by the 11 free throws he made, as he only made 3 of 15 shots from the field.
During Boston’s first two games against Detroit this season, Tatum scored at an efficient rate. The Pistons were defeated 128-112 on November 9 and 117-108 on November 12 behind 31 and 43 points, respectively, from him.
Key Injuries: Smart remains out with an ankle injury. C Luke Kornet is questionable with an ankle injury.
Kornet is questionable to play on Monday after spraining his ankle in Friday’s game against the Suns. If healthy enough to play, the 27-year-old will likely see about the same amount of court time against the Pistons as he did in the previous five games (12.0 minutes per game).
THE PISTONS
Before this game, the Pistons had lost three of their last four. On Saturday night, the Suns beat the Pistons 116-100 at home. Both at the beginning of the game and at the beginning of the second half, Detroit let the Suns get out to a quick start. This hurt the Pistons’ chances.
Key Injuries: Cade Cunningham is out for the season and Marvin Bagley III is out for a minimum of six weeks after hand surgery.
Stewart has started the previous two games, including Saturday’s loss to Phoenix, in which he logged 37 minutes. He’s nursing a hip injury leading up to Monday’s game against Boston, and if he can’t go, Jalen Duren and Isaiah Livers could see more playing time.
