Andrew Garfield Wants Spiderman to be Gay & Exploring His Sexuality

Andrew Garfield wants his ‘Spiderman’ character to stray his spidey web all over someone of the same sex. According to the actor, he believes it would be an interesting spin on the romantic tale if the main love interest ‘MJ’ turned out to be a boy for once. He would love for Spiderman to be exploring his sexuality and thinks they could take the story to a new place:

”I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ. And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! … So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

When asked who he would cast as Spiderman’s gay love interest if given the choice, Andrew thinks that Michael B. Jordan would be perfect for the part:

”I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better – we’d have interracial bisexuality!”

Commenting on the surprise cut of Shailene Woodley who was set to play MJ in the upcoming film, Andrew says that while it’s unfortunate, it makes sense for the story to be that way:

”Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.”
