3 Celebrities, Including Salma Hayek, That Have Been Knighted

Salma Hayek is now set to become a Knight. She was named on French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s official New Year’s list of people who will receive the Légion d’Honneur. Hayek, 45, will take part in a formal induction, which involves a Presidential medal pinning. It will likely take place in the next two months at the Élysées Palace. So what did Salma do to deserve such a high ranking? The Legion of Honor is awarded to military personnel or civilians for their service to France. Recipients don’t have to be French but are often internationally recognized figures. They can wear a small rosette pin to indicate their rank following the induction.  Some people are not happy with Salma being awarded, including political figures in France. They believe she did nothing to deserve the honor and accuse President Sarkozy of using the list for publicity before the next presidential election.

It may not be clear why Salma Hayek is being knighted, but she’s not the only celebrity who has been. Here are a few other stars that have been awarded with the Legion of Honor.

Mick Jagger

Mick Jagger was knighted by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace in London in 2003 for his 40 years of service to music.

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney was knighted by Queen Elizaebth II in 1997 for his service to music as well.
