Naomi Watts has been cast as Princess Diana in the upcoming film Caught in Flight. The movie was written by Stephen Jeffreys and will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. It will focus on the last two years of Diana’s life before her fatal car accident at age 36 in August 1997. During this time, she divorced Prince Charles and reinvented herself as a global humanitarian while searching for true happiness. Caught in Flight will also focus on Diana’s relationship with Dr. Hasnat Khan, who was said to be the love of her life. Watts released a statement saying, “it is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role.” The 43-year-old actress recognizes that Princess Diana was “loved across the world” and she can’t wait to rise “to the challenge of playing her on screen.” It was rumored last year that The Help star Jessica Chastain would play Diana in the film, but Watts was a better fit for the role and is expected to “encompass the role beautifully.”

Playing Princess Diana would be a major moment in any actress’s career and Naomi Watts is excited to represent the “global icon.” Not many stars have the chance to portray royalty in movies, but many have played fictional princesses at some point in their career. Here are a few celebrities that temporarily get the chance to live every girl’s dream of being a princess.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway played a normal girl that discovers she’s actually a princess in the 2001 film The Princess Diaries. She reprised the role for the sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Amy Adams

Amy Adams played Giselle, a fairytale princess sent to our world by an evil queen, in the 2007 film Enchanted.
