This Makes Me Want TEQUILA!

Variety is reporting that Judd Apatow and Paul Reubens are teaming up for another Pee-wee Herman movie, described as a “road pic built around a giant adventure.” (Which makes it different from Pee-wee’s Big Adventure…how?) Apatow got the idea after seeing Reubens perform in the theater revival of the Pee-wee Herman Show, which has been received with much fan adoration.

If this gets off the ground, Apatow will only be producing and won’t have a hand in writing or directing (officially, anyway). The script is being written by Reubens and Paul Rust (Inglourious Basterds and I Love You, Beth Cooper), so this could really go in any direction. From what I know of Rust’s movies (which is just what I saw in commercials before I put them on mute because God help me if I ever see anything else about Inglourious Basterds), he has a cartoony sensibility, although that could be the director more than anything. I really don’t know how this is going to turn out; the movies Judd Apatow directs (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up) tend towards realism, albeit in realities where people are much funnier than usual, while the movies he produces can be absurd to the point of surreal (Anchorman, Talladega Nights). He does have a way with geeky man-children, though, so this might be okay. I’m envisioning a 2-hour version of the Cirque du Soleil scene from Knocked Up. Nothing will ever top Danny Elfman’s score, though:
