Stylist-turned-designer Rachel Zoe has opened up on what it takes to be a success in the fashion design world. Rachel says you can’t simply have a passion for clothes because there is so much more that goes in to the entire process. She thinks it takes a lot of hard work to get anywhere and she has also learnt to never expect anything. She is proud of her own work when it’s done and takes full responsibility for it from start to finish which she thinks is important. She explained:

“Some people approach this thinking, ‘I like clothes so I can do this.’ It’s not – you have to love it and you have to work really hard at it and never expect anything to be handed to you. You have to want it and not just think small, and never be entitled, and never assume that, and take responsibility for your work, own it, and be proud of it, and don’t look for pats on the back.”

Rachel believes the best way to learn about the design business is to simply “jump in” and give everything an enthusiastic go. She says her team often help her but it’s a collaborative effort and she tries her best to do a bit of everything in the process:

“The best way that I learned, and how people in my office learn, is you should always jump in and do anything and everything. No one says, ‘This is my job, so this is what I’m accountable for.’ We help each other and everything is a collaboration and team work.”

The stylist reveals that she won’t ever wear her own label from head-to-toe because she admires so much other fashion design and she wants to also give her clients access to every possibility, not just her own design work. She said:

“I want to wear everything, I want to use everything, I want to be everything to my clients. I’m not going to be one-dimensional in that way and I love too many things.”
