French designer Jean Paul Gaultier surprised guests at his latest show by sending Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst down his catwalk during the fashion house’s Autumn/Winter Haute Couture 2014 presentation. Opening up on how he selected the singing star to appear at the event, Gaultier reveals that he has actually known Conchita since before her Eurovision win and thought she was the perfect person to represent his new designs:

”I met Conchita two years ago she came to one of my couture shows. I loved her look and when I heard that she will represent Austria for the Eurovision Song Contest, I was delighted. When she won I was crazy with joy. I always say that beauty is difference and Conchita has shown us all that she is unstoppable. And she looks great in couture; she is a real couture woman.”

Clearly with similar points of view about the world, Conchita previously dedicated her Eurovision win to “peace and freedom” and a world “without discrimination”, something Gaultier has also always stood for. She said on the night of her big win:

”This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom. We are unity and we are unstoppable. I share the opinion that this was not a victory just for me but for the people who believe in a future that works without discrimination and is based on tolerance and respect. This transcends borders.”

Gaultier has become known for his use of surprise celebrity guests who’ve taken to the catwalk at his shows, previously inviting Beth Ditto and Dita Von Teese to walk on his runway.
