January Jones

January has struggled as a single mother, especially because of her work: “I was back when the baby was only 6 or 7 weeks old so it was difficult. It was difficult to be a working mom and just juggling all of that. But everyone made it work and it was great.”

Jennifer has admitted it can be hard but she does her best to be there for her kids: ”In the same way that two people are needed to create a child, is also easier to educate them if there are two. When you are a single mum, the only positive thing is that your children are all for you. When the twins cry because their father isn’t with them, I always say to them that mine isn’t with me either but that doesn’t stop me feeling his love.”

Michelle Williams

Michelle says that there can be difficulties but she has always found a way to make it work: “Five years down the road, it’s my new normal. Now I can’t imagine, I don’t even really remember or would want my life previous. You make it work. You keep getting out of bed. Sometimes it’s just because you know there’s a cup of coffee downstairs.”

Reese Witherspoon

When she was a single parent, Reese was very stressed but didn’t even realize the pressure she felt: “I was hard on myself when I got divorced. And until I got remarried, I don’t think I realised how stressed I was. I feel so much relief. I don’t think I realised how stressed I was being a single parent. It was really, really stressful. It’s not easy on anybody.”

Solange Knowles

Solange often finds it hard to get the balance right but finds being near friends and family can help: “[Motherhood] is definitely a balancing act, and it is not at all easy,” she says. “I do the best I can, which involves a lot of saying no to things, actually, and a lot of really organized scheduling and a lot of help, to be honest. That was one of our major incentives to moving here. We were living in LA and I was writing and recording this album literally between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. every day because that was the time that Juelz was in school. We were completely isolated, we didn’t have any family or long-term friends there, and we didn’t have that support system built in there that we have in New York.”
