5 Celebrities Who Want Career Breaks

For one reason or another, these 5 stars all want to duck out of the spotlight for a while. Some have been working hard and feel they’re deserving of a break now, while others want to start a family or have recently welcomed a newborn into their lives and they don’t want to miss the early months of their baby’s life. Others have just completed several different projects and are looking to get out of Hollywood for a while so that their fans don’t get bored of them. We all need a break from our careers every now and then, and these 5 stars are planning how to best spend theirs. Some want just a few months or even a week off, while some are plotting to retire for a few years or longer!

Adele

After recently welcoming her first child, Adele says she is now ready for a long career break and may not return for years: “I am f***ing off for four or five years. If I am constantly working, my relationships fail. So at least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy. And then I don’t know what I’ll do. Get married. Have some kids. Plant a nice vegetable patch.”

Ewan McGregor

Ewan finished a busy year off and decided to spend time with his newborn: “I finished a film in September and I just felt I’d worked my a**e off for years. I felt like I just hadn’t stopped. Which I hadn’t. And I just thought one day that I didn’t have to work if I didn’t want to. It was like the sky suddenly opening up. I called my wife and suggested that I didn’t work for the rest of the year and it’s been lovely. It was great to be at home. We’ve got a new baby, and those are beautiful months that you won’t get back if you’re not there.”

Gwyneth Paltrow

With two kids to look after, Gwyneth needs to take plenty of career breaks to look after them and doesn’t work half as much anymore: “It was really important for me to have that break. I’m not going to work like I did before I had kids. I want to call Kate Winslet and say ‘Can you tell me how to do this?’ or call Cate Blanchett and ask her to describe her working day. But it’s not going to be back-to-back films.”

Michael Fassbender

After working hard for 2011, Michael gave himself a few months off so that people won’t grow tired of him: “I have been working intensely and putting a lot of stuff out, but that’s why I’m taking some time off now – I am not going to do anything for the rest of the year. You know, this just happened to me, these amazing projects came my way that I felt were too good to turn down, and for the past 20 months I’ve been going back to back, so now it’s time for me to clear the decks. Also, I don’t want to saturate and bore people.”

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Rosie is interested in taking a break in the future to become a mother: “Being a mum will be a big part of me. Look, I think my career is very self-indulgent. It’s all about me. I’m not a doctor, I’m not looking after people, I’m not saving children. I’m in the entertainment business. I’m a model. I’m an actress. So it is very self-involved. I think there is naturally a point where you think, ‘I don’t care about myself as number one any more.’ I want to care about other things.”
